Are there really no monthly fees?
Correct. UniFi Protect has zero subscription costs. All footage is stored locally on your NVR, and remote access through the UniFi Protect app is free. The only cost is the hardware itself and professional installation.
How many cameras does a typical home need?
It depends on the property. A standard luxury residence typically uses 8 to 16 cameras to cover all entries, the perimeter, garage, driveway, and key interior spaces. Larger estates may require 20 to 40+. We design a custom camera plan for every project.
How long is footage stored?
Retention depends on camera count, resolution settings, and NVR storage capacity. Most residential systems retain 30 to 90 days of continuous recording. We size your NVR to meet your specific retention requirements.
Can I view cameras remotely?
Yes. The UniFi Protect app provides live feeds, recorded playback, smart alerts, and AI powered search from anywhere in the world. Access is encrypted and does not require opening ports on your router.
Do UniFi cameras work at night?
Yes. IR night vision ranges vary by model: 9m (30 ft) on the AI 360 for indoor overhead coverage, 15m (50 ft) on the AI LPR optimized for license plate capture, 25m (82 ft) on the AI Pro (extendable to 40m with the optional Vision Enhancer), and 100m (328 ft) on the AI PTZ. The AI PTZ delivers enough IR coverage to illuminate an entire perimeter in complete darkness.
Will the AI LPR camera show me the rest of the vehicle at night?
No. The AI LPR uses an IR-pass filter optimized exclusively for capturing reflective license plates after dark, which means scene visibility outside the plate area is minimal at night. Ubiquiti's own guidance is to pair the AI LPR with a general purpose camera (such as the AI Pro) at every gated entry where vehicle make, model, and occupant details matter. We design every driveway and entry zone with both.
Can cameras integrate with my Lutron or Control4 system?
Yes. Camera events can trigger automation actions: lights on when motion is detected at the front door, shades closing when you leave, or a specific lighting scene when an unfamiliar vehicle enters the driveway. We program these integrations during installation.
Is the system expandable?
Absolutely. UniFi Protect is designed for scalability. Adding cameras later is as simple as running a cable and adopting the device in the Protect app. We also install additional NVR capacity when needed for growing systems.
