For larger homes, properties that lose power or internet often, or households where uninterrupted connectivity matters, Alarm Pro is usually the right choice. We assess this during the consultation.
Do I need a subscription for Ring Alarm to work?
No. The system works out of the box without a subscription. You can arm and disarm from the keypad, get push notifications when sensors trigger, and use the local siren as a deterrent. A Ring Protect subscription is optional and adds professional monitoring, remote arm and disarm from the app, cellular backup, and 24/7 backup internet for Alarm Pro.
How does professional monitoring work?
With a Ring Pro subscription, trained agents at the monitoring center receive every alarm signal. They contact you to verify the alarm is real, then dispatch police, fire, or medical responders if needed. The service runs around the clock and works whether you're home, asleep, traveling, or out of cell range. Alarm Professional Monitoring is included with Ring Pro at $19.99 per month.
What happens during a power outage?
The base station's internal battery keeps the system running for up to 24 hours. If you also have a Ring Protect subscription, cellular backup keeps the system connected to the monitoring center even if your internet is down. With Alarm Pro, you can add Ring Power Packs for additional battery backup and 24/7 cellular backup internet to keep your entire wifi network online.
Can I add sensors later?
Yes. Ring Alarm is fully expandable. You can add contact sensors for additional doors and windows, motion detectors, glass break sensors, smoke and CO listeners, water leak sensors, panic buttons, and additional keypads at any time. We size your initial system to your immediate needs and budget, then add components as the property evolves.
Does Ring work with my existing Ring cameras and doorbell?
Yes, and that's where Ring really shines. When the alarm triggers, your cameras automatically begin recording, and you can pull up live video from the app the instant you get the notification. You see what's happening, not just that something happened. The same Ring app handles cameras, doorbells, and the alarm system.
Will Ring integrate with my Lutron, Crestron, or Control4 system?
Honest answer. Ring's deepest integrations are with Alexa, Google Home, and the Ring ecosystem itself (cameras, doorbells, Ring Smart Lights, and Z-wave devices paired to the base station). Crestron Home and Control4 integration is available through third party drivers like Chowmain and provides limited bidirectional control, mostly status reporting and basic arm or disarm. Lutron does not have a direct Ring integration. Cross system automations between Lutron lighting and Ring alarm events are bridged through Alexa routines or platforms like Home Assistant. For most luxury homes, Ring works best as a dedicated security layer alongside your primary control system, not as a deeply unified component of it.
Is Ring suitable for vacation homes or properties I'm rarely at?
Yes. The combination of professional monitoring, cellular backup, and remote arm and disarm from the app makes Ring an excellent fit for second homes. You can check status, view camera feeds, and respond to alarms from anywhere in the world. We also configure trusted neighbors or property managers as backup contacts who can disarm or grant access when needed.
