The Right Lutron System for Your Home
Lutron currently offers three residential lighting control platforms. Two are engineered for professional installation at progressively sophisticated levels of integration (HomeWorks QSX and RadioRA 3), and one is a DIY entry option (Caséta) available at retail. VIP Smart Homes specializes in the two professional platforms, recommending HomeWorks QSX for new construction and major renovations, and RadioRA 3 for retrofits in existing homes. The right system depends on your home's size, scope, and how deeply you want to automate.
HomeWorks QSX
New Construction · Estates · Wired + WirelessLutron's most powerful residential system, the platform of choice for architects, lighting designers, and clients who demand uncompromising integration. Supports up to 10,000 lighting zones across 50,000 square feet, handles both wired and wireless devices, and enables conditional logic that makes your home respond intelligently to how you actually live.
RadioRA 3
Existing Homes · No Wiring · Pro InstalledLutron's flagship wireless system, the smartest way to bring whole home automation to an existing home without opening a single wall. Built on dedicated Clear Connect RF technology, completely independent of Wi-Fi. Scales from a single room to a 400 device whole home system across up to four processors.
Lutron Caséta
DIY · Apartments · Available at RetailLutron's entry level DIY system available at Best Buy, Home Depot, and Amazon. A solid introduction to smart lighting for apartments or small homes up to 2,500 square feet. Caséta is not the platform we specify for new pro installations, but it's a respectable starting point. When you're ready for professional grade, we'll be here.
RadioRA 2 is now a legacy platform, no longer recommended for new installations. The good news: the new RadioRA 3 processor is backwards compatible with most existing RadioRA 2 dimmers, switches, Pico remotes, and shades. We can upgrade your processor to RadioRA 3 while preserving your existing devices, then add new Sunnata keypads and Lumaris tape lighting where you want them. Most RA2 to RA3 upgrades are completed in one or two visits.

Keypads & Wall Controls
The keypad is where your smart home becomes tangible. It's the object on your wall that you reach for in the dark, that your guests instinctively understand, and that sets the tone for how your home feels the moment you walk in. Lutron offers a range of keypads from sleek modern elegance to hand finished solid brass. What follows is a sampling. Each keypad line comes in dozens of finishes, configurations, and engraving options that we specify during your design consultation. Explore all keypad finishes.
Sunnata: Flagship Wireless Keypad
Sunnata is Lutron's signature wall control for RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks QSX. A sleek, low profile keypad with large tactile buttons, vertical LED light bars that glow softly in the dark, and a fully customizable layout. Available in 24 gloss and satin finishes with custom engraved buttons identifying each scene. The Sunnata Hybrid combines dimmer and keypad functions in a single device, ideal for retrofit installations where wall space is limited.
Palladiom: Architectural Precision
Palladiom is Lutron's architectural statement. A flush, uniplanar design where buttons and faceplate sit in the same plane, creating a seamlessly integrated wall surface. Available in Matte Polymer, Architectural Metal, Architectural Glass, and Signature Metal finishes including Matte Graphite and Champagne. Buttons are custom engraved and backlit. The keypad of choice for homes where architecture demands hardware that disappears into the wall.
seeTouch: The Classic Engraved Keypad
seeTouch is Lutron's most established and widely specified keypad. Instantly recognizable, with raised engraved buttons that tell you exactly what each one does. Available in an extensive range of finishes including polished metals, brushed metals, glass, and architectural matte, with up to 7 buttons per keypad. The gold standard for clients who want a keypad that reads clearly and unmistakably as a lighting control.
Alisse: Hand Crafted Solid Brass
Alisse is Lutron's most luxurious wall control. Machined from solid brass, hand finished, and precision engraved to order. Each keypad is a piece of craftsmanship that coordinates with architectural hardware, plumbing fixtures, and custom millwork. Available in 11 Signature Metal finishes. For estates where every material and finish detail has been considered, Alisse is the natural choice.
Aviena: Heritage Toggle Keypad
Aviena is Lutron's newest and most distinctive keypad. Hand finished in solid brass with a sculpted curvilinear form, Aviena replaces the standard wall switch with a weighted mechanical toggle that delivers a satisfying, purposeful click. It looks and feels like heritage hardware, the kind of toggle you'd find in a beautifully restored estate, but behind it is the full intelligence of the HomeWorks platform.
These are just the starting points. Between finish options, button configurations, and engraving choices, the combinations available for your home number in the thousands. During your consultation, we'll bring samples so you can see and feel the finishes against your actual walls and hardware.
Ketra: Full Spectrum Tunable Lighting
The world's most advanced residential light source. Ketra produces full spectrum natural light from 1,400K to 10,000K with 16.7 million colors and lifetime color accuracy through Color Lock technology. It shifts automatically throughout the day to mirror natural daylight, supporting circadian rhythm, rendering art and materials with extraordinary accuracy, and transforming the atmosphere of any room.
Rania: Natural White Light
Rania is Lutron's three channel architectural light source, delivering natural white light across a wide color temperature range (1,800K to 5,500K) with 90+ CRI and R9 above 90 from 2,700K to 5,000K for noticeably truer reds, skin tones, and materials. For clients who want light that feels genuinely alive and naturalistic without stepping up to a full Ketra installation, Rania delivers remarkable quality at a more accessible investment.
Lumaris: Tunable White + RGB Tape Light & Downlights
Lumaris is Lutron's architectural LED tape light and downlight family, available in tunable white (1,800K to 4,000K) for coves, under cabinets, toe kicks, recessed downlights, and built in millwork, and in full color RGB for accent lighting, backlighting, and dramatic architectural effects. Native to your Lutron system with no third party controllers, meaning your tape light responds to the same scenes, schedules, and keypads as everything else in your home. 90+ CRI with flicker free dimming down to 0.1 percent.
Everything You Want to Know About Lutron
Below are the questions we hear most often from homeowners researching Lutron. If you don't find your answer here, the consultation is always free and there's no faster way to get a clear answer than talking through your specific home.
What's the difference between HomeWorks QSX, RadioRA 3, and Caséta?
HomeWorks QSX is Lutron's flagship platform for new construction and large estates, supporting up to 10,000 zones across 50,000 square feet with both wired and wireless devices and full integration with Ketra full spectrum lighting and Palladiom architectural keypads. RadioRA 3 is the wireless professional system, ideal for existing homes up to 7,500 square feet and 400 devices, with no walls opened. Caséta is the entry level DIY system available at retail, suitable for apartments and small homes up to 2,500 square feet and 75 devices.
Which Lutron system is right for my home?
The short version: if you're building new or doing a full renovation with open walls, HomeWorks QSX gives you the deepest integration and is the only platform that supports Ketra and Palladiom. If your home is already built, RadioRA 3 delivers professional grade wireless control without opening any walls. If you live in an apartment or small home and just want app and voice control on a few rooms, Caséta is a fine starting point. We help you decide during the consultation, no commitment required.
Do I need a Lutron dealer to buy a Lutron system?
For HomeWorks QSX and RadioRA 3, yes. These professional systems require certified dealer specification, programming, and commissioning and are not sold at retail. Caséta is the only Lutron system available DIY through Best Buy, Home Depot, and Amazon. VIP Smart Homes is a certified Lutron dealer for the Greater Seattle area and Eastside.
How much does a Lutron system cost?
Costs vary widely based on system, scope, and finishes. A small RadioRA 3 retrofit for a few rooms typically starts in the low five figures including programming and commissioning. Whole home HomeWorks QSX systems with Ketra lighting, motorized shades, and Palladiom or Alisse keypads run substantially higher and are typically scoped per project. We provide complete written quotes after the consultation, with no surprise pricing on the back end.
Can I upgrade my RadioRA 2 system to RadioRA 3?
Yes. The RadioRA 3 processor is backwards compatible with most existing RadioRA 2 dimmers, switches, Pico remotes, and shades. We can upgrade your processor while preserving your existing devices, then add new Sunnata keypads and Lumaris tape lighting where you want them. Most upgrades are completed in one or two visits.
What is Ketra and why does it matter?
Ketra is Lutron's flagship lighting technology, a full spectrum tunable LED that produces natural white light from 1,400K to 10,000K with 16.7 million colors and lifetime color accuracy through Color Lock. It shifts automatically throughout the day to support circadian rhythm, renders art and materials with extraordinary accuracy, and transforms how your home feels in a way standard LEDs simply cannot. Ketra is exclusive to HomeWorks QSX.
What's the difference between Sunnata and seeTouch keypads?
Sunnata is Lutron's modern flagship wireless keypad with large tactile buttons, vertical LED light bars, and a low profile architectural design. It works with both RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks QSX. seeTouch is Lutron's classic engraved keypad with raised buttons and clear button text, available in a broader range of finishes and configurations including up to 7 buttons. Both are excellent. Sunnata is the more contemporary aesthetic, seeTouch is the more traditional. Explore all keypad colors and finishes.
Does Lutron work with Alexa, Google, Apple HomeKit, and Sonos?
Yes. Lutron systems integrate natively with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit, Sonos, Josh.AI, Crestron, Control4, Savant, and most other smart home and AV platforms. RadioRA 3 includes built in HomeKit support. Voice commands, app control, and automated routines all work alongside your physical keypads.
How long does a Lutron installation take?
A small Caséta DIY install takes a homeowner an afternoon. A typical RadioRA 3 retrofit for a 5,000 square foot home is one to three weeks depending on scope. A whole home HomeWorks QSX installation with Ketra, motorized shades, and Palladiom keypads is typically a four to twelve week scope coordinated with construction or renovation milestones. Lighting design is a separate phase that runs in parallel.
Do Lutron motorized shades work with the lighting system?
Yes, and this is where Lutron really shines. Motorized shades on Sivoia, Triathlon, or Palladiom platforms integrate natively with HomeWorks QSX and RadioRA 3, responding to the same scenes, schedules, keypads, and voice commands as your lights. Natural Light Optimization tracks the sun and automatically adjusts shade positions throughout the day.
What's the warranty on a Lutron system?
Lutron offers a one year limited manufacturer warranty on most products, which extends to five years (plus limited coverage in years six through eight) when the system is professionally installed and registered by a certified dealer like VIP Smart Homes. Lutron motorized shades carry an eight year limited warranty.
Can I add Lutron in stages?
Absolutely. Many of our clients start with one room or a single floor and expand over time. RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks QSX both scale up from small starting points. We design your initial system with future expansion in mind so you can add keypads, shades, and rooms whenever you're ready.
